A Virginia-based lawyer has been recognized in a recent survey as the nation’s highest paid general counsel.
Denise Keane, executive vice president and general counsel of Richmond-based Altria Group Inc., earned $6.5 million in total compensation last year, according to ALM Corporate Counsel’s 2011 GC Compensation Survey. The survey ranked the 100 best-paid in-house lawyers at large public companies, based on salary plus bonus/nonequity incentive compensation.
She received a salary of $731,817 and a bonus of $5,724,000.
Keane is the first woman to top the list in the survey’s 17-year history. She moved up 33 spots from last year.
In addition to Keane, four other Virginia corporate counsel made the list:
