Richmond lawyer Steven D. Benjamin will be sworn in Saturday as president-elect of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) at its 53rd annual meeting in Denver.
Benjamin has previously served as first- and second vice-president, treasurer, secretary and a member of the association’s the board of directors.
The president-elect serves a one-year term and is automatically elevated to president of the association the following year.
In addition to his private practice in the firm of Benjamin & Desportes, Benjamin serves as special counsel to the Virginia Senate Courts of Justice Committee and to the Virginia State Crime Commission. He is a member of the Virginia Board of Forensic Science and the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission.
A former president of the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, he is a Fellow of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers and in 2003 received the Virginia State Bar’s Lewis F. Powell Jr. Pro Bono Award.
