Tony Richardson, the former police chief of Damascus, was in court yesterday for sentencing.
Richardson previously had pleaded guilty to eight drug-dealing charges and one weapons charge. His lawyer, Anthony Anderson, told Washington County Circuit Judge Birg Sergent that Richardson did it to impress a woman with whom he was romantically involved.

Author ponders book ban in her native SW Virginia

Grundy native Lee Smith, the award-winning author who has chronicled life in Southwest Virginia in a number of novels, was back in her home region this week. She had a speaking engagement at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

In Memoriam: Judge David D. Brown

Retired General District Judge David D. Brown died last week at his home in Abingdon. He was 77.
Judge Brown was the longtime commonwealth’s attorney in Washington County, serving from 1964 to 1978. He was named to the general district bench in 1982, where he served until his retirement.
