Latney gets public reprimand with terms from VSB

Former Caroline County Commonwealth’s Attorney Harvey Latney Jr. has made a deal with the Virginia State Bar to settle ethics charges against him.

Under an agreed disposition, Latney has received a public reprimand with terms for violating rules relating to the safekeeping of client property and responsibilities for nonlawyer staff. Latney’s longtime secretary embezzled an estimated $290,000 from clients of his private law practice. The prosecutor’s job in Caroline is a part-time position, allowing for a private practice on the side.

Latney, who was defeated for reelection last fall after serving for 30 years, also agreed to provide full restitution to the clients within five years and to report to the bar on his accounts regularly.
