GOP questions fundraiser

Virginia Republicans have a beef with Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s plans to raise a little cash for the Democratic party next month.  As this Washington Post blog reports, GOP leaders are considering filing a complaint about the $200-a-head inaugural ball in Arlington on January 19.

The issue is a Virginia law that bars state office holders from fund raising during the General Assembly session, which convenes five days before the black-tie gala.  The Democrats say they’re okay because the money is collected before the session begins and goes only to party coffers, not to individual officer holders.  The Republicans say, with Kaine as one of the hosts, the event still violates both the letter and the spirit of the law.
