Virginia Republican chairman loses McDonnell’s support

Republican state party chairman Jeff Frederick may be on the ropes as party leaders petition for his ouster and the GOP candidate for governor says it’s time for change.

But Del. Jeffrey M. Frederick, R-Prince William, is vowing to fight removal and says he has enough support within the party’s central committee to survive the April 4 vote, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

To remove Frederick from his chairmanship, 58 of the 77 central committee members would have to vote against him.

Former Attorney General Bob McDonnell spoke yesterday in favor of Frederick’s removal, saying that Republicans needed stronger leadership if they hoped to take back the governorship and strengthen their majority in the House of Delegates.
