Intruder season opens in Virginia

Just five days after a Botetourt County man blasted an intruder with a shotgun in a killing pronounced self-defense by authorities, a Campbell County resident apparently finds herself in a similar position.

The sheriff’s department tells The News & Advance a 35-year-old man was shot and killed today at a Long Island residence in what’s being termed self-defense.

In such cases, the elected prosecutor usually makes the final call.  The paper reports officers plan to present evidence to Campbell County Commonwealth’s Attorney Neil Vener tomorrow.  In Botetourt County, Commonwealth’s Attorney Joel Branscom appeared in a television interview in a T-shirt — apparently at the scene — to explain his findings.

UPDATE: The Campbell County shooter apparently was the decedent’s girlfriend, according to WDBJ.
