McGuireWoods gets Texas footprint

McGuireWoods LLP is establishing a Texas presence by acquiring a nine-member litigation boutique, Nickens Keeton Lawless Farrell & Flack LLP, with offices in Houston and Austin, effective Jan. 1.

Another Houston litigator, Ron Franklin of the Houston firm of Franklin, Cardwell & Jones, also will join McGuireWoods.

McGuireWoods Chairman Richard Cullen said, “Establishing an office in Texas is a key part of the firm’s strategic plan, as our clients and McGuireWoods Consulting’s clients frequently have needs there.”

J.C. Nickens said his firm has had “a good run” as a small outfit, but the merger with McGuireWoods “gives us the ability and capacity to represent clients in any litigation, regardless of size, complexity or urgency.”

The expansion is the firm’s fifth in as many years. In 2009, the firm enlarged its international presence by partnering with a London firm last year and merged with a Charlotte firm in 2008, two years after expanding its offices in Chicago and Los Angeles by merging with separate law firms in those two cities.

The firm’s news release on the latest merger is here.
