Local bars plead for judges

‘Tis the season for local bar associations to urge the General Assembly to pay special attention to their districts and circuits when deciding how to budget and fill judgeships around the commonwealth.

The latest entreaty comes from the Roanoke Bar Association, where two judgeships are expected to be vacated this year with the retirements of circuit Judges Jonathan Apgar and Patrick Doherty. The RBA board last month recommended the Assembly fill “at least one of the judicial vacancies as a matter of utmost urgency.”

Also last month, the president of the Augusta County Bar Association wrote to Gov. Bob McDonnell saying it is “absolutely imperative” that a vacant general district court seat be filled. The seat was vacated by the Jan. 1 retirement of Judge William Heatwole.

  1. The bar president for Harrisonburg /Rockingham has also sent a letter to the Governor about This vacancy since Judge Heatwole also sat in Harrisonburg. Caseload stats in Harrisonburg suggest the judgeship is vital to the 26th district as well and support the filling of this judgeship in the the 26th district in contrast to the case load numbers in the 25th district.
