Lawmakers interview judges today

Members of the General Assembly courts committees will interview judicial candidates this afternoon, and the list of candidates provides a good indication of who is on the short list for bench vacancies that should be approved for funding on Wednesday.

Among circuit court nominees are John M. Tran of Fairfax, William H. Atwill Jr. of Leesburg, Carroll A. Weimer Jr. of Manassas, Stafford County General District Judge Michael E. Levy, Spotsylvania County Juvenile & Domestic Relations Judge Patricia Kelly, Portsmouth Juvenile & Domestic Relations Judge Joel P. Crowe, and Norfolk General District Judge Bruce A. Wilcox.

Roanoke lawyer David B. Carson appears to have support from key senators in his bid for a Roanoke Valley circuit court judgeship expected to be funded in this session.

Sens. John S. Edwards, D-Roanoke, and Ralph K. Smith, R-Botetourt, announced their intention Monday to jointly support Carson for the 23rd Circuit vacancy. Both senators pledged to support Frank W. Rogers III for a future judgeship. Both Carson and Rogers are on the interview schedule.
