Delegate’s retirement might help daughter get judgeship

A prosecutor’s bid for a general district judgeship may have played a role in the decision by another veteran state legislator to retire from the General Assembly.

Del. Bob Purkey, R-Virginia Beach, announced Saturday he will not seek re-election after 27 years in the legislature.

Purkey told The Virginian-Pilot last month he would be willing to step aside if it would clear the way for daughter Charlotte Purkey to land a general district judgeship. Charlotte Purkey is an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Norfolk.

Charlotte Purkey could be in line for an unfilled seat on the Virginia Beach General District Court, the paper reported. Circuit court judges have the authority to temporarily fill district court judgeships that were funded but not filled by the General Assembly.
