Iaquinto appointed to general district judgeship

Virginia Beach circuit judges have appointed Del. Sal Iaquinto to a general district judgeship.

The Virginian-Pilot reports Iaquinto won approval after the judges interviewed 10 applicants last week. He becomes a judge on July 1, taking the seat formerly held by retired Judge Robert L. Simpson Jr. who stepped down in Jan. 31, 2012.

The interim appointment means Iaquinto must be elected by the General Assembly in the 2014 session for him to continue on the bench.

Iaquinto had announced he would not seek re-election to the House of Delegates this year, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Del. Barry Knight told the paper he expects Gov. Bob McDonnell to make interim appointments to the circuit court bench in the next 10 days.
