Va. to receive $392K in Google settlement

Google G(AP) — Virginia will receive more than $392,000 as part of a multi-state settlement with Google Inc. over claims that the company violated consumer privacy.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli made the announcement Monday. Thirty-seven states and the District of Columbia are sharing in the $17 million settlement.

The payment settles allegations that Google, the Internet search engine, altered its coding to circumvent default privacy settings on Apple’s Safari web browser to allow advertisers to set tracking cookies. The company stopped the practice in February 2012 after it was widely reported in the media.
