Court allows record sanctions judgment to stand

Peter Vieth//December 23, 2013

Supreme CourtAn $880,000 sanctions award against a litigant and her lawyers will stand, under a decision from the Supreme Court of Virginia this month.

The court decided Dec. 19 not to hear appeals from either Yvonne Crist or her lawyers, Stephen C. Glassman and Billy B. Ruhling II, in the record-breaking sanctions award imposed by Fairfax County Circuit Judge Jonathan C. Thacher in July.

Orders entered by the Supreme Court recited that the court saw no reversible error in Thacher’s judgments against Crist and her lawyers.

Thacher awarded sanctions after he concluded Crist, with her lawyers, waged a prolonged legal campaign against her ex-husband founded on “baseless, purely speculative allegations.”
