Fishwick, Ballou endorsed by Roanoke Bar Association

Roanoke lawyer John Fishwick has emerged as a local favorite for the federal bench seat being vacated this year by U.S. District Judge Samuel Wilson.

Both Fishwick and U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Ballou received the endorsement of the Roanoke Bar Association Tuesday, with Fishwick as a narrow favorite, according to RBA president Stephen Lemon.

When two nominees receive vote totals within five percent of one another, the RBA bylaws call for endorsement of both candidates, Lemon said. Fishwick was the higher of the two, but exact vote counts are not disclosed, Lemon said.

Fishwick was endorsed Friday by the Salem/Roanoke County Bar Association.

The endorsements are considered by Virginia’s two U.S. senators, who then make recommendations to President Barack Obama. The president appoints district judges subject to the confirmation of the Senate.
