Slain Berryville official’s sister admits perjury

BERRYVILLE (AP) The sister of a Berryville town councilwoman slain in 2009 has pleaded guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice.

The Winchester Star reports that 62-year-old Deborah Lynn Smith of Burkeville is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 24.

She entered her plea Monday in Clarke County Circuit Court.

Clarke County Commonwealth’s Attorney Suni Mackall says Deborah Smith’s brother, 55-year-old Timothy Smith Jr. of Burkeville, told her that he and 27-year-old Tony Sharpe of Farmville killed their sister, Gail Smith.

Deborah Smith had testified previously that she had no knowledge of anyone involved in Gail Smith’s death.

Gail Smith was found fatally shot in her home.

Sharpe is awaiting sentencing on first-degree murder and related charges. Timothy Smith is scheduled to stand trial in September on capital murder and related charges.
