VBA expected to host Senate candidates’ debate

The Virginia Bar Association has extended invitations to the two major party candidates for this year’s U.S. Senate election to debate at the group’s summer meeting in July.

The campaigns of both Democrat Mark R. Warner and Republican Ed Gillespie have acknowledged invitations to debate, the VBA said in a news release. A meeting has been scheduled to discuss the details of the debate with the campaigns, the VBA said.

PBS anchor and editor Judy Woodruff as agreed to serve as moderator for the debate. Woodruff moderated last year’s face-off with Terry McAuliffe and Ken Cuccinelli in the early part of their campaign for governor.

The summertime VBA debates often are the first opportunity for the public and news media to see the candidates together and hear their platforms.

This year’s debate is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, at The Greenbrier in West Virginia.
