Emails show unease over Puckett tobacco job

(AP) Newly released emails show the interim director of the Virginia tobacco commission was uneasy about the timing of a potential job offer to former Democratic state Sen. Phillip Puckett, whose recent resignation has been investigated by the FBI.

Tobacco commission emails were released Thursday in response to a public records request.

In one email, interim Executive Director Tim Pfohl expressed concerns about announcing Puckett’s appointment to the tobacco commission about the same time as his resignation.

Puckett withdrew his name for consideration for a commission job after some Democrats alleged he’d been offered the job in exchange for resigning. His departure from the Senate gave Republicans control of the upper chamber.

Both Puckett and Kilgore have denied there was any type of deal or that there was any criminal wrongdoing.
