Hon. Robert E. Payne, a senior U.S. district judge in Richmond, was named “Leader of the Year” by the 2014 class of Leaders in the Law.
Virginia Lawyers Weekly’s Leaders in the Law program, now in its ninth year, honors attorneys and others in the legal field who have made significant contributions to the practice of law.
This year’s 30-member class of honorees was recognized during a ceremony held Oct. 23 at the Science Museum of Virginia.
The honorees were asked to vote for one member of their class as the “2014 Leader of the Year.” This year’s leaders selected Payne for the honor.
Payne, a veteran McGuireWoods litigator who took the federal bench in 1992, is highly regarded for his handling of complex commercial cases and high-profile criminal cases. His decisions continue to set the parameters of criminal litigation in the district.
