Fairfax County Circuit Judge R. Terrence Ney died Nov. 24 after a prolonged illness, according to Chief Judge Dennis J. Smith of the Fairfax court.
A former president of the Virginia Bar Association, Judge Ney served over the years as a leader in numerous bar organizations on the state and national level. For the past 13 years, he taught appellate practice and procedure as an adjunct law professor at George Mason University.
“Judge Ney was a superb jurist and a very good friend,” Smith said. “He will be sorely missed.”
Judge Ney is a Harvard graduate who received his law degree from the University of Texas.
He took office as a circuit judge in 1999. Prior to joining the bench, Judge Ney practiced with McGuire Woods LLP where he specialized in civil litigation and appellate practice.
Judge Ney was the editor, and for the first two editions served as a chapter author, of a treatise on appellate practice in Virginia and federal courts.
Funeral arrangements were not complete as of Monday, Smith said.
