W&L seeks dismissal of expelled student’s lawsuit

LEXINGTON (AP) Washington and Lee University wants a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit from a student who says he was expelled for having sex with another student who says she did not consent.

The former student is referred to U.S. District Court documents as John Doe, and he claims the sex was consensual. He filed suit in December and said the Lexington school discriminated against him because he is male.

The Roanoke Times also reports that the plaintiff contends the private university’s Title IX coordinator promoted a message that “regret equals rape.”

In the university’s request to dismiss, the coordinator, Laura Kozak, denied making that statement or that she believes that sentiment.
