Feds end review of VMI’s handling of sex assault report

LEXINGTON (AP) Virginia Military Institute has been removed from a list of colleges under federal investigation for their handling of sexual assault reports.

VMI spokesman Stewart D. MacInnis told The Washington Post that an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education found insufficient evidence to support allegations that the school mishandled a sexual assault report.

The agency’s Office of Civil Rights began the Title IX investigation in September 2014.

MacInnis said the office notified the school that it took appropriate actions prior to and during the investigation. He said VMI officials are gratified that the school is no longer on the list.

The newspaper said MacInnis declined to provide a letter from the federal office notifying the school of the investigation’s findings, citing federal privacy law.
