Special grand jury to investigate fatal police shooting

NORFOLK (AP) A special grand jury will investigate the fatal shooting of a man by Norfolk police in 2014.

Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Greg Underwood’s office said a judge on Wednesday granted Underwood’s motion to impanel a special grand jury to investigate the death of David Latham.

The office said in a statement that Underwood’s legal review indicates the appropriate course of action should include an examination of evidence by a special grand jury.

The 35-year-old Latham was shot on June 6, 2014, at his home. Police have said Latham threatened an officer with a knife.

Latham’s family has said he was mentally ill and that officers had helped him obtain psychiatric care in the past.

The family’s attorney, John Cooper, told media outlets he believed it was a case of excessive force.
