Staunton courts expected to reopen after asbestos cleanup

STAUNTON (AP) Staunton’s city courthouse is expected to reopen following the cleanup of asbestos.

City spokeswoman Ruth Jones told The News Leader that the Cochran Judicial Center was closed last week as a precaution after a contractor inadvertently removed third floor ceiling tiles containing asbestos. She said the courthouse is expected to resume normal operations today.

Jones said the contractor wasn’t involved in an abatement process that began in late July after several other third floor ceiling tiles collapsed. A sample of the debris tested positive for asbestos.

Workers were moved to the second floor after the collapse and the building remained open until last week.

Jones said officials had believed the asbestos was contained to the third floor.
