McCullough to be sworn in this month

(AP) Virginia Court of Appeals Judge Stephen McCullough will be sworn in as a justice of the state Supreme Court later this month.

McCullough’s investiture will be held in Richmond on May 23 at 3 p.m.

Virginia lawmakers voted in March to elevate McCullough to the high court, ending a bitter months-long political battle over the vacant seat.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Democrats wanted to elect Justice Jane Marum Roush, whom the governor appointed to temporarily fill the seat last year. Republicans objected to Roush’s appointment, saying they hadn’t been consulted.

Prior to being elected to the Court of Appeals in 2011, McCullough worked in the Virginia attorney general’s office for more than 10 years.
