General Assembly gives extra option to compensate jurors

A bill amending Virginia Code § 17.1-619, passed by both houses of the General Assembly during the 2017 session, awaits Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s signature and could give Virginians who serve on juries another option to receive their pay.

HB 2324 would allow Virginia circuit courts to pay jurors through a prepaid debit card instead of receiving cash or check. Inside NOVA originally reported at the end of February about the bill.

Currently state law requires courts to pay jurors $30 per day to serve.

The measure, introduced by Del. Joseph Yost, R-Petersburg, passed the House of Delegates 98-0 before passing 25-15 in the Senate.
