Bar warns of fake law firm check scam

The Virginia State Bar is warning the public to be aware of a possible scam in which individuals have received what appears to be a cashier’s check representing some sort of payment by a fictitious law firm.

The individuals who received these checks suspected foul play and contacted a law firm with a very similar name, because the checks were for large amounts and the recipients had not done business with the law firm, the VSB said.

The checks are likely to be counterfeit, will not clear the banking system and could result in a chargeback against the person cashing the check or implicate the person in attempting to pass off a bad check, the bar said.  Anyone receiving checks from an unfamiliar law firm should use caution, attempt to verify the source of payment and contact the FBI or local law enforcement officers, the VSB said.
