LeClairRyan founder departs as firm ponders future

Gary LeClair, a founder of the Richmond-based LeClairRyan firm, is moving to Williams Mullen as of Aug. 5. Williams Mullen announced July 25 that LeClair and two other LeClairRyan partners, David Lay and Andrew White, will join WM next month.

The moves come as questions arise about the future of LeClairRyan. A group of 15 aviation lawyers left LeClair for Philadelphia-based Fox Rothschild in a move announced July 24.

LeClairRyan leaders have been quoted as saying they are “considering options.”

LeClair, who founded LeClairRyan in 1988 with Dennis Ryan, served as its CEO until 2011, and was its chairman until 2015.
