Lawsuit: Virginia inmate’s fatal injuries were ignored

FARMVILLE (AP) The mother of an inmate who died in a Virginia jail is suing officials, saying her son’s urgent medical needs were ignored and led to his 2017 death.

Victoria Sisson filed a lawsuit Aug. 19 accusing officers and medical staff at Piedmont Regional Jail of ignoring Jason Sisson as he suffered from medical complications, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

Another inmate reportedly attacked Jason Sisson, 39, and upon his return from receiving care for skull fractures, Sisson didn’t receive a check-up or required monitoring for days. The suit, citing video footage, says he banged on his cell, bled and passed out.

He was later taken off life support from brain damage.

An officer was fired for falsifying records saying he made mandated checks.

The lawsuit seeks more than $100 million in damages. Jail officials declined to comment.
