Chesterfield legislators divided on judge picks

Two dissenting state legislators has delayed the decision making on potential new judges in Chesterfield County.

A majority of the county’s General Assembly delegation backed Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Jayne Pemberton for the circuit bench, to replace the now-retired T.J. Hauler, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Feb. 24. Attorney Tara Hatcher was favored to fill Pemberton’s seat.

The dissenting legislators – Del. Delores McQuinn, D-Richmond, and Del. Lashrecse Aird, D-Petersburg – preferred General District Judge Pamela O’Berry for the circuit seat and attorney Curtis Hairston for O’Berry’s seat.

The conflict meant no Chesterfield judicial candidates were interviewed in the Assembly session on Feb. 21. A legislative impasse could leave the choice to Gov. Ralph Northam.
