Storm pounds coast, closes many courts

Many courthouses closed for the day all along the eastern edge of Virginia as Tropical Storm Isaias brought dangerous winds and heavy rain early Aug. 4. The storm made landfall with hurricane force near Ocean Isle, North Carolina late Aug. 3.

As the storm approached, the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals announced their offices in Richmond would close Tuesday. The Virginia State Bar closed its office, as well.

Courts in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Williamsburg and Richmond and other localities announced closings for Aug. 4, according to a list posted on the Virginia Judicial System website.

By Tuesday morning, there were reports of tornadoes in eastern Virginia. High water was hampering travel in Richmond and other areas. The city of Suffolk reported multiple homes damaged by downed trees.
