Best known for:

Employment law for plaintiffs only

Signature case or representation:

The biggest case of my career involved a college student who contacted the 10-person law firm where I was working in Norfolk. She had a dispute with her landlord. We won the case and about two years later she accepted my marriage proposal. Later she decided to go to law school. She specializes in employment law and is also a “Go To” employment lawyer.

Other important cases:

I have been fortunate enough to be on legal teams that have collected over $160 million for class action members in cases at the intersection of employment law and the FCRA.

Working with clients:

I ask clients questions, consider the answers, apply the applicable law to the facts and advise them honestly. As a result, I only represent about one out of every 50 people who contact me.

Best career advice:

To listen, because a lawyer learns nothing new when he is talking. It is also the hardest advice to follow.

Outlook for 2021:

The last four years were very painful for plaintiff’s counsel, and some of the federal institutional and judicial changes are not going away any time soon. Just as I was starting to like federal court, I am probably headed back to state court, where there are new opportunities.
