Attorneys who resigned from the Virginia State Bar that wish to resume practicing law in the commonwealth no longer have to pass the bar exam to earn readmission, according to an amendment to the Rules for Integration of the Virginia State Bar.
The amendment to Section IV, Paragraph 13-25(C) of the Rules of Integration of the Virginia State Bar, Part Six of the Rules of Court was announced by the Supreme Court of Virginia on March 1.
The change amends one sentence of the paragraph to read in relevant part that a former attorney who wishes to resume practicing law in Virginia after resigning from the bar must “either pass the Bar examination or meet all eligibility requirements for admission without examination under Rule 1A:1.”
Previously, the passage stated that former attorneys seeking reinstatement must pass the bar exam, with no alternative option.
The amendment is effective April 30.
