Hampton police report jury duty phone scam

HAMPTON (AP) Police in Hampton are warning residents about a jury duty scam.
Hampton Police Detective Brandt Hess says a caller pretending to be with law enforcement told a 75-year-old man that he had missed jury duty. The caller threatened to arrest him if he didn’t immediately pay a certain amount using a pre-paid debit card.
Hess says the man withdrew a large amount of money and complied with the caller’s demands.
Police tell media outlets that anyone receiving such calls should hang up and contact police.
Hess says no arrest warrants are issued when residents miss jury duty. When that happens, residents are informed through the mail that they need to report to court to explain why they missed the court date.
