Retired Charlottesville attorney Robert E. “Bob” Stroud died June 4. He was 85.

A native of Chester, South Carolina, Mr. Stroud earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Washington and Lee University in 1956 and 1958, respectively. In 1959, he began his law career as an associate with the firm now known as McGuireWoods in Charlottesville; he became a partner five years later.

Mr. Stroud remained actively involved with Washington & Lee, the Charlottesville community, the Presbyterian Church and various professional organizations and associations, including the American Bar Association, the American Judicature Society and the Virginia State Bar. In 2008, Mr. Stroud earned the Washington & Lee Outstanding Alumnus Award; he became a lecturer at the college and law school. He retired from law practice in 2002.

Mr. Stroud is survived by his son, Rob; his daughter, Margaret; his sister, Leila; his partner, Irene; and many grandchildren.
