Robert Harvey Chappell Jr., who practiced law in Richmond for more than 50 years, died on Dec. 1 at age 86.
Mr. Chappell spent his entire legal career commencing Jan. 1, 1950, with the law firm of Christian & Barton and served as chairman of the firm.
Mr. Chappell was closely associated with The College of William and Mary. He earned his bachelor of arts degree from W&M in 1948, and a B.C.L. (later, J.D.) in 1950. In 1984 he received an honorary legum doctorem. In addition, Chappell was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Order of the Coif and editor of the Law Review.
Mr. Chappell served the college in multiple capacities, both as a member of the Board of Visitors, as rector, and as president of both the Law School Society and the Society of the Alumni. He also received the college’s highest award, the Alumni Medallion, in 1968.
Mr. Chappell was the husband of the late Ann Callahan Chappell and he is survived by his wife, Joan Midkiff Farley Chappell; a son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter.
