Retired Halifax County Juvenile & Domestic Relations Judge Frank M. Slayton, a former eight-term state delegate, died Oct. 29 at his home in South Boston. He was 81.

As a member of the House of Delegates from 1972 to 1987, Judge Slayton took a special interest in family welfare issues as a member of the Health, Welfare and Institutions and Courts of Justice committees.

A graduate of Halifax County schools, Judge Slayton attended the University of Virginia as an undergraduate and received his law degree there in 1959. He was a prominent Democrat in the Assembly and took pride in his friendship with U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Judge Slayton served for 20 years in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the Virginia Army National Guard. He was a member of the Halifax County School Board for eight years.

He retired from the bench in January 2004.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Jean, three children and five grandchildren.
