198 sit for 1-day bar exam
Peter Vieth//September 10, 2020//
A “COVID-overflow” bar exam brought 198 applicants to the Greater Richmond Convention Center on Sept. 10 for a one-day session. The unusual procedure was intended to offer a respite to those concerned about conditions at the two-day July exam in Roanoke.
Pandemic precautions at the July exam may have been effective. “We are not aware of any COVID-19 cases that might have originated from the July exam,” said Catherine Crooks Hill, Secretary Treasurer of the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners.
The Sept. 10 exam went well, Hill said. “The applicants were courteous and respectful of the health and safety protocols,” she said after the exam on Sept. 10. Social media reports at the time appeared to agree there were no serious problems.

The Richmond exam presented candidates with nine essay questions and 10 multiple choice questions, according to the VBBE website. Each essay is worth 10 points and each multiple-choice answer is worth one point, so the maximum theoretical score is 100. A passing score is 64 or above.
There was no multistate bar exam component of the Sept. 10 session. Results are expected to be released Nov. 20, Hill said.
