Years in practice: 42
Best known for: Nationally recognized tax attorney and litigator
Why I chose my practice area: Firm leadership suggested leveraging my federal prosecution trial experience to distinguish myself from transactional tax lawyers. That eliminated 80% of competition, since few tax lawyers regularly appear in tax trial and appellate courts.
Most memorable case: I obtained a unanimous Supreme Court of Virginia decision saving my client $8.3 million in machinery & tools taxes, and successfully defended a Fortune 50 company from a $300 million IRS deficiency in U.S. Tax Court.
What makes me a leader in my field: Active speaker at tax conferences, 30+ years; William and Mary Tax Conference Planning Board; founded community bank (26-year board chairman), Master in J. Edgar Murdock Inn of Court; founded William and Mary Law School Tax Clinic
Bar involvement/leadership roles: Past chair, VSB Tax Section Section Virginia Bar Association Tax Section and Military Law Section; ABA Tax Section committees; CTLP president
Representative clients: International Paper Company, Schneider Trucking, Dominion Energy, PRA Group, Bank of America (among others)
