Unsung Legal Heroes 2022

Unsung Legal Heroes 2022Virginia Lawyers Weekly has sponsored awards programs recognizing top lawyers in the Old Dominion for years. But we know that the lawyers don’t do it all themselves. We decided to look a little more closely at what makes a law practice successful. Lawyers will be the first to acknowledge that they are only as good as the team behind them. The support staff at a law firm works largely behind the scenes; many support employees will stay at a law firm literally for decades. But they don’t always get the recognition they deserve. We decided to change that.

With our “Unsung Legal Heroes” awards, we seek to honor law firm employees in a number of categories for their dedication, passion and hard work. We reached out to the Virginia legal community for nominations and the response was enthusiastic. In this special section, you’ll meet the members of the 2022 class of “Unsung Legal Heroes.”

Those honored are in six categories: firm administrator, legal secretary, librarian, marketing, paralegal and receptionist.

Not surprisingly, when we informed the honorees that they were selected, many were appreciative, yet humble. Please join us in congratulating the “Unsung Legal Heroes” Class of 2022!

It is extremely unlikely that I would’ve gone to college without the post-9/11 GI Bill. And to me, there are few things in the universe that sound better than a heavy metal guitar riff played at high decibels on a well-tuned audio system.

Wendy SpiveyWendy Spivey
Judicial Docket Administrator
Norfolk Circuit Court Judges’ Office

Why did you choose a career in the legal field?

To be quite honest, I wasn’t looking for a job in the legal field. It was just an opportunity that presented itself and I took it.

Why did you choose a career in the legal field?

The field piqued my interest during my pending asylum case. I wanted to affect how immigrants are treated after they’ve retained legal representation. My boss, Miriam Airington-Fisher, and I had similar goals. The struggles within the immigrant community are everywhere, but I can’t be everywhere, so I try my best to assist here.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

Giving good news to our clients when their cases have come to a positive resolution. Knowing that my work will make a difference in someone’s life is very rewarding.

What do you consider your biggest professional accomplishment and why?

Working for Airington Law. I came from hospitality, and my first job at the firm was client experience coordinator, but I wanted to actively work on cases, so I decided to step up to the paralegal position.

Tell us about your first job and what you learned from it.

Cashiering, delivering, restocking and transcribing documents at my mother’s office supply store. She taught me to work hard, provided tools to succeed, and helped me develop multitasking skills.

What do you enjoy doing in your time away from work?

I lived in Charlottesville for over 10 years and fell in love with the area. I like to be outdoors; at a nice brewery, cidery, vineyard or bar; and going to Belle Isle, taking my dog with me as much as I can.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

Asheville, N.C.

What are two things about you that not many people know?

I studied architecture in college, and I learned English in my country, El Salvador.

Why did you choose a career in the legal field?

I’ve always been interested in history and government, as established and functions. After four years of taking history, government and legal classes, I knew I wanted a career in the legal system.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

Hands down, the people. My co-workers are a great group of folks; it’s a collaborative environment where everyone brings their strengths and skills to ensure our clients receive the best.

What do you consider your biggest professional accomplishment and why?

Finding joy in my everyday work. I have been with PennStuart for 20 years and I still enjoy my job.

Tell us about your first job and what you learned from it.

I was a lifeguard and swim instructor at the YMCA. I learned that hard work and fun can happen at the same time.

What do you enjoy doing in your time away from work?

I love food: growing, cooking, eating. My garden and kitchen are my happy places.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

It is a tie between the Outer Banks and New York City. My husband and I love the slow pace of the beach during the offseason, but are just as likely to hop on a train to bustling NYC for a few days.

What are two things about you that not many people know?

I am a movie connoisseur and love to quote movies in my daily life. And I tend to make a really big mess while cooking and usually end up using every pot, pan and utensil in my kitchen.

Tammy Jo WeeksTammy Jo Weeks
Medical Malpractice Legal Assistant
TimberlakeSmith, Staunton

What impressed you most when she was first hired at the firm?

Tammy had very little relevant experience when she applied almost 30 years ago. She promised she could type and was a very hard worker, but there was something special about her that came through. She had a calm confidence and competence.

What did you enjoy most about working with her?

Her boisterous sense of humor and her loyalty to those she worked with. She came to work each day with a “get ‘er done” attitude. Tammy was very good to the clients and anticipated what needed to be done.

What do you consider her biggest contribution to the firm and why?

Her dedication.?Whether it was handling tricky scheduling issues, getting a last-minute pleading out, or tracking down a difficult witness, Tammy understood the importance of the team’s work and took pride in her role as the “nerve center.”

What did she enjoy doing in her time away from work?

Camping with her family and traveling (Utah was a favorite). She was very involved with her church and was devoted to her children and grandchildren.

What are a few things about her that you remember most?

Tammy cared about her co-workers and their families, on and off the job. We miss her friendship, her smile and her loyalty.

Anything else you would like to say about the honoree?

Tammy is missed tremendously on a professional level, but more importantly, on a personal level. She said what she meant and meant what she said, and she was not afraid to speak truth to power. From Steuart Thomas: “I could not have asked or wished for a better secretary and friend. She was the model.”

Legal Assistant/Paralegal
Gentry Locke, Richmond

Why did you choose a career in the legal field?

Before the pandemic, I worked in restaurants, sold wine, taught middle school and served as a museum educator. I knew that applying for a job in a law firm would be an excellent opportunity to learn new skills and challenge myself.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

There’s always something new to learn, and the fast-paced environment works well with the skillsets I gained from my prior positions. The lawyers I work for are all-around good, quality people too.

What do you consider your biggest professional accomplishment and why?

Putting myself through school while dealing with adversity in my personal life. I had to make sacrifices and learn what my mind, body and spirit could withstand.

Tell us about your first job and what you learned from it.

At 16, I worked as a grocery store cashier. I learned that you could connect with people even in the most mundane places, that 4062 is the PLU code for cucumbers, and that you should always return your cart.

What do you enjoy doing in your time away from work?

Baking and trying new recipes that I see on the Great British Bake Off. I also enjoy painting and sewing while listening to podcasts and evening cuddles with my dog, Greta.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

My husband and I love camping. We go to the Cove Campground in Gore multiple times a year.

What are two things about you that not many people know?

I like karaoke — a lot. I also enjoy thrifting for unorthodox items I don’t need and. My favorite recent find is a vintage duck phone like the one used in “Jersey Shore.”

Paralegal/Office Manager
Phelan Petty, Richmond

Why did you choose a career in the legal field?

I wanted a career helping people. After completing high school in my native Tashkent, Uzbekistan, I moved to Riga, Latvia, where I attended law school. I moved to the U.S. one year short of completing my degree, and decided to find a job where I could immediately apply the skills and knowledge I had gained.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I really enjoy that no two cases are the same, that I meet people from all walks of life and get to know my clients really well, and working with my team.

What do you consider your biggest professional accomplishment and why?

Participating in jury trials over the years — including the biggest verdict in Farmville at the time — and many more that I was very proud to be a part of.

Tell us about your first job and what you learned from it.

Restaurant hostess. I made lots of lifelong friends and learned how to handle stressful situations.

What do you enjoy doing in your time away from work?

The outdoors: hiking, going to the beach, traveling and exploring the Virginia wine country.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

Europe is a favorite, but my heart belongs to New Zealand. It’s breathtaking — and home to my little sister and my 5-year-old niece.

What are two things about you that not many people know?

My parents moved here from Uzbekistan eight years ago and live with my husband and me. And I have a fear of flying — which is funny, since I love traveling overseas.

I have always enjoyed helping others and have a strong attention to detail, so when looking to transition from the elementary school teaching world, the legal field piqued my interest.

Every day is different and provides its own unique set of tasks and challenges. I am lucky to work in an environment with so many helpful colleagues whom I can turn to for help. They make each day truly enjoyable.

Working retail in the summers during school taught me patience and customer service. I learned that even when you are faced with difficult customers or situations, it is important to stay focused and be kind.
