For nearly 30 years, James H. Shoemaker Jr. has sought justice for whistleblowers, victims of fraud, and clients harmed by unlawful employment practices.

A partner at Patten Wornom Hatten & Diamonstein, he has tried more than 70 cases to verdict and has resolved many more through mediation and settlements.

Shoemaker’s accomplishments include a $4 million settlement of a case in which a group of African American employees had asserted claims of racial discrimination, harassment and retaliation against a corporate employer. In a 2017 trial of a wrongful termination case involving an erroneous back-to-work date, Shoemaker recovered $747,000 in damages under the Family Medical Leave Act, the largest FMLA verdict ever obtained in Virginia, according to the firm.

Shoemaker attended the Virginia Military Institute on an ROTC scholarship and earned his law degree at the University of Richmond.
