With a strong tax and accounting background, J. Thomas “Tom” O’Brien, Jr. is well known for his ability to anticipate problems and create opportunities for his numerous clients in mergers and acquisitions.

An exceptional negotiator with the ability to handle complex transactions, O’Brien has served as chair of the Business Law Section of the Virginia Bar Association and is on the executive committee of the Business Law Section for the Richmond Bar Association.

He currently heads his Spotts Fain’s Corporate and Business Transactions Practice, as well as its mergers and acquisitions team. From entity formation to exit strategy planning, the University of Richmond graduate has established himself as a valued partner representing buyers or sellers in deals involving closely held corporations, partnerships or limited liability companies.

O’Brien’s eclectic recreational activities include teaching martial arts, making furniture with hand tools, and restoring automobiles (including, notably, a 1956 Ford Thunderbird).
