Still focused solely on family law today, Phillips & Peters has been 100-percent women owned throughout its 14 years of operation. All eight of its employees are women, including four attorneys and four staff, and bring a diverse range of expertise and life experience to their respective roles.
Within the firm, Phillips & Peters embraces an entrepreneurial spirit and encourages a learning mindset. Acknowledging the need for attorneys and staff, many of whom are mothers and grandmothers, to balance their personal and professional lives, the firm created an open-leave policy to allow employees to better manage both work and home responsibilities.
As a first-generation college graduate herself, owner Kimberly Phillips’ professional goals have included advancing other women and other women-led businesses throughout her career, including working with women-led vendors and featuring women-owned small businesses on its social media channels.
Committed to advancing the next generation of legal professionals, attorneys at Phillips & Peters have mentored numerous young female attorneys during law school and in the nascent stages of their careers. Knowing the difference that having the opportunity to pursue higher education can make, the firm leaders sponsor a scholarship for first-generation female college students to attend school.
For its work and commitment to community, Phillips & Peters was recognized by the Hampton Roads Chamber as Norfolk’s Small Business of the Year, and Kimberly Phillips received the Hampton Road Chamber Leadership Award in 2020.
